Test comparison Xiaomi Mi5 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S7 which one you should buy

Both smartphones were presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The least one can say is that these two titans who do not have the same strategy: one brings innovation while the other target about the value / price premium. What to expect from these two smartphones? Which one would it be better to buy?

I do not think an exaggeration to say that the LG G5, the Galaxy S7 / S7 edge and the Xiaomi Mi 5 were the most popular phones of this congress (which does not mean that others are bad, watch out!). We had the opportunity to test both smartphones and now are able to offer a further test. We could see in an article that is the LG G5 facing the Galaxy S7, now find out what is the Xiaomi Mi 5 against the Samsung Galaxy S7.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: design and finish

It is important first to clarify that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will be available in several versions. The leaks had announced, Xiaomi confirmed at the MWC and the strategy is interesting: by offering several styles of smartphones, the brand focus more user styles.

These three smartphones differ on some points but not at the level of the screen, they all have a 5-inch screen. The first two versions do not differ in design but by their performance. Thus, the standard versions (32 and 64 GB) should have a glass back as the third version, the Mi Pro 5, it will be a ceramic finish. The proposed colors are the most elegant colors: white, black and gold. It is strange that Xiaomi has not chosen the color gray / silver.

If Xiaomi does not reinvent the concept of good design with great new features, it has a really successful product. My colleague Peter confirmed to me that the Pro version, despite the embedded material (ceramic), really does not make his weight. The screen borders are very thin, rounded corners, the ergonomics are optimal. It is still and always a matter of taste but overall the design is very successful ... but it somewhat resembles the Galaxy S7.

What that means, "it looks like the Galaxy S7"? First, dimensions are quite similar. The dimensions of the Galaxy S7 are 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm, those of the Xiaomi Mi 5 are 144.55 x 69.2 x 7.25 mm, and they both have a display of around 5.1 inches. They both have an office making button fingerprint reader on the front, below the screen, but it is true that the Mi 5 is oval, more elongated.

In terms of colors, the S7 will exist in four colors: gold, white, black and silver. In other words, the most premium colors.

The objective of the S7 camera always exceeds a tad on the back, but that's not the reason that would push me to favor the appearance of the Xiaomi Mi 5 on that of the new flagship of Samsung. Both are obviously very successful but the S7 has a side a little bling bling which I think is a bit excessive, with all these rounded, but I'm sure it will please a lot of people (and this is the whole point).

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: screen quality

The screen size is almost the same on both smartphones: 5.15 inches for the Xiaomi Mi 5, 5.1 inches for the Galaxy S7. In terms of definition, by cons, the difference is clear: the Galaxy S7 has a QHD resolution (1440 x 2560 pixels), while the Mi 5 has a Full-HD definition (1080 x 1920 pixels). Neither manufacturer has desired opt for a definition 4K too high definitions have not yet been proven, and if this were to happen, it would most likely on a PHABLET.

This is fine on paper, but what about differences in actual condition? The color rendering is excellent on both phones, more brightness is very good. A more comprehensive test with the phones side by side will allow us to see the details easier but at first glance, both have a very big potential. However, these screens have other secrets in reserve.

It is important to note that the Galaxy S7 have a Super AMOLED screen. It perpetuates the tradition of the Galaxy range, which, from the beginning, benefit from this technology. The advantage of this type of screen is simple, the color black does not have to be retransmitted, thus saving energy. With the Galaxy S7, this function makes sense with the new Always ON function. With it you can access various options or applications (calendar, notifications etc.) without turning on the screen. As you can imagine, beyond the convenience this function also plays a big role on the autonomy of the smartphone. Xiaomi unfortunately offers no such feature.

In terms of protection, both phones use Gorilla Glass technology that will allow them to avoid scratches. We tend to underestimate the value of this protection, but it is really important because it will prevent disastrous situations, especially if one takes into account the price of these phones.

The Galaxy S7 has better definition and Always ON functionality while Xiaomi is still in a little more classic features but optimized to the maximum. On this point, the Galaxy S7 wins the round.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: software interface

In terms of software interface, the two smartphones will arrive directly with Android 6.0. That's the least of it for newer phones, especially high-end. Obviously, this new version of Google's OS brings a lot of new

In terms of graphics interfaces, here we have two totally different schools. On one side the famous TouchWiz, famous for its azure blue; another MluI, interface Xiaomi. Like FlymeOS (Meizu) or EMUI (Huawei / Honor), MIUI is a typical Chinese interface of smartphones: the graphic influence of iOS is indisputable. If it pleases the Asian market, it is anyway much less appreciated on the Western market as it is remote Stock Android. For example, application icons (ugly enough for my taste) are all on the home screen because there is no application drawer. Fortunately, this problem is easily solved with the installation of a custom launcher. By cons, you can forget about installing a Custom ROM for Xiaomi does not allow the installation.

TouchWiz is graphically less trafficked than MIUI. Of course, we can easily see the differences Stock Android, especially with the blue (garish) that is found on the notification bar and menus, but in the whole TouchWiz is pleasant to use. Overall, we do not see any major changes on the Galaxy S7 but at least Samsung has made efforts on the bloatware "only" about twenty applications are pre-installed. We will see during our final test what there is to say on the subject, but it is again a matter of taste.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: Performance

The Galaxy S7 will feature a Snapdragon 820 processor in China and the United States, an Exynos 8890 in Europe. The Xiaomi Mi 5, he will also have a Snapdragon processor 820 associated with 3 or 4 GB of RAM (depending on version). The standard version of the Mi 5 will see its processor clocked at 1.8 GHz while the other two will run at 2.1 GHz. In terms of GPU, we have an Adreno 530 chip for Mi 5 and ARM Mali-T880MP12 for the Galaxy S7.

One of my colleagues has already convinced by the potential of S7, he explains in his article. This is not my case, and I think Xiaomi Mi 5 (and the LG G5) have great potential with their technical characteristics. We'll see what the results of tests on the benchmarks.

In all cases, regardless of the winner, the two processors have proven we have very heavy there. The Snapdragon 820 is so good that most high-current range / have come to use it.

Samsung told the S7 CPU is 30% more powerful than the Galaxy S6 and its graphics chip is (always depending on the manufacturer) 64% more performance than the S6. In addition, a water cooling system was set up in the phone to avoid overheating problems. The idea is interesting but a hydraulic cooling system is really only useful in case of as intensive as frequent use.

I would point to Xiaomi Mi 5 but with a reservation, the Exynos 8890 could still surprise us. Our final test will show us right from wrong.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: Camera

In terms of photography, both devices have great potential in using some technological aspects that we will present. First, observe the number of megapixels of both devices. On the Xiaomi Mi 5, we find a sensor from Sony (IMX298) 16 megapixels. On the Galaxy S7, we find a 12-megapixel camera. On this point, the Xiaomi Mi 5 seems to be leading but you know that it is not the number of megapixels makes the quality of the photo. There to be 16 or 20 is irrelevant to the extent that this is compensated by a good opening and some features such as optical image stabilization.

Regarding the opening, Samsung is doing better than its Korean rival. The S7 has an aperture of f / 1.7 while its Chinese competitor remains on f / 2.0. They both have an optical stabilizer, the Xiaomi Mi 5 even has a 4-axis thereby make good pictures even when tremors. The S7 does not admit defeat because it is the first smartphone to use double pixel technology, which allows you to focus much more quickly.

At the front, the mid 5's camera is 4 megapixels, the S7 is 5 megapixels.

We could test only briefly cameras these phones. The results are very good for both models, but we must do more extensive testing and under different lighting conditions to really say which is doing best. At first glance, I'd say the Galaxy S7 is better.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: autonomy

Autonomy is for many one of the main criteria to consider when buying a phone. This is certainly good reasons for so many users require a removable battery so you can change it when it begins to show signs of weakness. As well tell you right away, the battery is not removable on any of these two smartphones. In terms of capacity, both devices offer 3000 mAh.

Both devices run on Android Marshmallow, so they will access different power saving options that are not negligible. I think for example Doze menu. To recap, the Galaxy S7 has the Always On mode which allows access to certain parameters and applications without having to turn on the screen.

Both devices offer a fast charging system (Quick Charge 3.0), important feature because it can be useful, especially for the nomads of us. The Galaxy S7 also offers wireless charging system (Qi) which can charge the phone in two hours.

The Galaxy S7 wins this round. With its fashion and Always On its wireless charging system, it seems to be better in terms of autonomy. A more comprehensive test will allow us to make us a better idea.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: Other features

Both devices share certain characteristics. They both have a fingerprint reader, in fact, is at the same location on both phones: a home button below the screen. It's not really a surprise since today all high-end smartphones has one, but in the case of Xiaomi it is still important to note. In the same vein, we can state that both devices also have an NFC chip.

The Galaxy S7 also has another advantage: a resistance to dust and water and over 1.5 meters for 30 minutes (IP68). It is also optimized for games through Game Center which will provide access to specific features. Another strong argument for Samsung: it offers the possibility of using a microSD card, the Xiaomi Mi 5 does not. For cons, the Xiaomi Mi 5 provides him with a USB Type-C and an infrared port.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: release date and price

Both phones were presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Pending its marketing, the smartphone is available for pre-order on Samsung's website, and if you buy it you will also receive a free Gear VR headset.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 will, he sold from 1 March in China ... but not in France. You can get it only from retailers for a price of around 400 euros, depending on the model you seek.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Xiaomi Mi 5: verdict

I'm not a big fan of Samsung but we must recognize that the S7 wins this versus. The Xiaomi Mi 5 is a great smartphone, and it can still surprise us after our final test, but the Galaxy S7 has several interesting features: microSD card, wireless charging ... On the other hand, the Xiaomi Mi 5 actually can -being fewer things, but it's really fine. A little less potential for a much lower price, it is not necessarily a bad thing.

In your opinion, which of these two smartphones will be the most interesting?
